Frequently Asked Questions

How co-ed is Birchmont?
Most daily activities are not co-ed, as we believe boys and girls benefit from participating in athletics and skill-based activities within their own age and gender groups. That said, boys and girls enjoy equal access to the same activities and opportunities. Camp-wide events, special programs, trips, and social activities are co-ed, allowing campers to interact naturally in a comfortable, well-supervised setting. Living areas are separate, providing privacy and appropriate supervision, while still allowing siblings and friends to connect.
Where do Birchmont campers come from?
Birchmont is proud of its diverse and well-balanced camper community. While many campers come from the Northeast where we are located, we welcome children from over 20 U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, Europe, South America, and Asia. Just under 10% of our campers are international, creating a global environment that reflects today’s world—all set in pristine New Hampshire, known for its perfect summer climate and beautiful lakes.
Cabin size and supervision
Our residential experience combines classic camp charm with modern comfort. Younger campers reside in intimate cabins of 8–12 campers with four staff members, while older campers enjoy spacious cabins housing 10–14 campers with three staff. With over 150 staff members supporting approximately 300 campers, Birchmont ensures attentive supervision at all times, including overnight counselor presence in every cabin. All cabins are fully equipped with private bathrooms, electricity, hardwood floors, and comprehensive safety features.
What is Birchmont’s program philosophy?
At Birchmont, we focus on building community and confidence through success. Our experienced senior staff – made up of teachers, parents, and coaches – meet each camper at their individual skill level and help them grow from there. By creating achievable challenges in a supportive, fun environment, campers gain confidence, resilience, and a strong “can-do” mindset.
How competitive are the sports programs?
Competition at Birchmont emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth. Campers may participate in inter-camp games, tournaments, sailing regattas, and swim meets, but the focus is always on effort and improvement. Win or lose, we ask only for each camper’s personal best.
How do parents know Birchmont is the right fit?
Choosing the right camp means choosing the right environment for your child—not simply following friends. Birchmont’s 90–95% camper return rate speaks volumes about the experience we provide. It’s the clearest indicator that we consistently meet both camper expectations and parent goals.
Do campers wear uniforms?
Birchmont is not a uniform camp. Campers dress comfortably, though an official Birchmont T-shirt is required for off-camp trips and inter-camp competitions.
Transportation to camp
We provide round-trip, air-conditioned transportation from major regional hubs, including New York City, Roslyn (LI), Darien (CT), and Boston’s Logan Airport. Families may also choose to drop off their child at camp, which includes a brief welcome tour with senior staff.
What makes Lake Wentworth special?
Lake Wentworth is rated Class A by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services—this is the top rating given and means the water is exceptionally clean. The lake features a natural sandy bottom, minimal boat traffic, and protected wildlife areas. Birchmont enjoys nearly a half mile of private sandy beach, with summer water temperatures averaging in the 80’s, creating an ideal and safe waterfront experience.
